Communication Skills for Teachers

Workshops
'Cultivating Respect in the Classroom'

This workshop for teachers explores the importance of both the teacher's authority, and the human relationship between teacher and child, examining specific language skills and approach in both areas. We look at how commonly used language can have the opposite to the intended effect, and how to make simple changes to our usual communication to effect positive change in both the children's behaviour and the quality of the relationship.

  *Simple principles of effective
   communication
  *Practical day-to-day communication
   skills
  *Creating your classroom culture
  *Effective discipline
  *Stronger more authentic relationships

One or two day workshops are available. The one-day workshop explores basic skills within a clear framework of principles; the two-day workshop expands these skills further and provides opportunity for refinement of skills based on feedback from participants after experience of practising the skills in the classroom in between the two workshop days. Numbered skill sheets are provided to support every step of the programme, and these can be used by teachers as quick reminders when practising the skills in the classroom. The workshop can be booked by individual schools for one or two inset days.

The Facilitator

Stephanie Davies-Arai is an accredited Teacher Effectiveness Training instructor, with nine years' experience of running T.E.T. courses in schools. The 'Cultivating Respect in the Classroom' workshop has been developed from the basic principle underlying the T.E.T. programme, of communication based on respect for self and respect for the child. The workshop has been modified and refined over a period of some years, based on experience in the classroom and playground, and continuing feedback from teachers.

Classroom and playground experience over a period of ten years has included running Circle Times on subjects such as bullying, friendship issues and anger management; Year 6 Peer Mediation training; Conflict Resolution between children; facilitating a Circle of Friends strategy for children with social problems; and working as a playground supervisor. Experience with teaching staff includes running full T.E.T. courses; Communication Skills workshops; individual consultations with teachers and programmes for playground supervisors, as well as developing policies and strategies for behaviour management and bullying at Lewes New School, a small independent school in East Sussex. Click on the link below for more information about the school:
